Hey Steve,

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us. I know the Adeodatus group really values your presence and contributions. The others surely look up to you - I do.

I hope to put the computer down soon so I can show up one Wednesday night. See you then!

Peace,
Dave

Hey Dave;

I read Joe's post and would just like to let everyone know, as an ex-offender myself and a member of the Adeodatus group (check out the Prison Ministry link or copy and paste http://www.spirhealth.com/prison-ministry/), Father Paul and a group of dedicated people do follow through and in fact socialize with people like me. This group has had an amazing affect on my life. Each week we share our experiences, strength, advice, love, and most importantly God's word. God speaks through each of us and I can always feel his presence. I have received many blessings since being released from jail, and I count the Adeodatus group as one of the greatest. I am inspired each week to continue doing what I know is right. Today, I am in touch with Jesus and with his guidance am living a responsible, productive life. I am deeply indebted and eternally grateful.

Hello,

Here is a response to the Newsletter from our Friend Joe.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks, Paul. What a heart wrenching, yet at the same time, hopeful story by Cliff. Have you thought of beginning with one person like Cliff and escorting him out of prison as he begins his life anew? What about asking your parishioners if one of them will take a chance with Cliff and offer him employment? You are doing wonderful work with these people but for one of them, take the next step. Maybe even set them up with a counselor for when they get out. I know that it is not a good idea to socialize with prisoners when they leave prison but perhaps you can send them on their way with some contacts.

Love,
Joe

1. What do you feel when you read “Cliff’s” story? Is he salvageable? Should the Church reach out to people like him?

Recognition, empathy identification. My story is a little different to Cliff's but the feelings are the same. I know that Cliff is salvageable. I'm not quite sure about the Church's role in reaching out. Perhaps the key is about being accessible, authentic and available.

2.Who is your real “love?” What void is in you? Does anyone know?

Lol - quite a question Dave . . .I think my sponsor has a pretty good inkling of how I am wired.

3. Have you ever gone to a 12 step group? Have you ever sought help for an addiction? What role does shame play?

Yes, Ive been to several 12 step programs and I identify as a member of NA. I got clean after a hell of a lot of struggle. In fact it wasn't till I gave up the struggle that I started to get some relief from the things that used to push me around. Shame is never far below the surface. Coming to terms with it has been a long term proposition but one that has definitely improved. No silver bullet for that stuff but having a good honest look at self is a good start. Fearless inventory and appropriate disclosure has been invaluable.

We would love to hear your response to Cliff's story. Here are Fr. Paul's suggested reflection questions.
